Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Mikasa Yatsubusa is a charming ultra-dwarf cultivar characterized by dense, tightly clustered green leaves on a very slow-growing framework. The foliage emerges in bright green in spring and forms a neat, bun-like shrub structure over time. In autumn, the tiny leaves transform into warm shades of golden-yellow before dropping. It is exceptionally well-suited for rock gardens, troughs, and high-end bonsai cultivation.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Spreading ยท Dwarf

Dwarf with an upright-spreading framework and dense, overlapping tiers of foliage.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

Roots & heritage

The story behind Mikawa yatsubusa

Cultivar origin
Tลkai region, Japan

'Mikawa yatsubusa' is a dwarf Japanese maple of Japanese origin. Johnson's Nursery places its discovery in the Tลkai region, associated with the former province of Mikawa. Leafland similarly reports that it was found in the 1970s and credits J. D. Vertrees of Maplewood Nursery, Oregon, with first growing it in the United States. That American cultivation credit should not be treated as proof that Vertrees selected the original Japanese plant or made its first worldwide introduction. The reviewed accounts do not identify the original finder or establish an exact selection or introduction year. They also do not document named parents or a controlled cross. Its defining features are exceptionally short internodes, densely overlapping green leaves, and sculptural branching that gives an untrained plant a bonsai-like appearance.
