Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Kamagata is an outstanding dwarf upright cultivar featuring small, deeply lobed leaves tightly packed onto a dense, compact framework. The spring foliage emerges with soft green tones tinged with delightful pink margins. During summer, the leaves mature into a clean, rich green before turning brilliant shades of orange and gold in autumn. Its diminutive size makes it a premier choice for Japanese bonsai styling or small courtyard gardens.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Dwarf

Dwarf with upright branches. Hanging leaves do not make the branch habit weeping.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Kamagata

Cultivar origin
Oregon, United States
Discovered / selected by
J. D. Vertrees

'Kamagata' is an American Japanese maple selection associated with J. D. Vertrees in Oregon. Burncoose Nurseries identifies its garden origin as Oregon, USA, while Junker's Nursery specifically credits Vertrees with selecting and naming it. Maple Ridge Nursery separately credits him with its introduction. These accounts distinguish his selection and naming work from bringing the cultivar into cultivation, but do not establish dates for either event. The reviewed sources do not document a controlled cross, named parents, or an original collection accession. Its horticultural identity is a small, branching maple with delicate foliage: Junker's describes rusty-red edges on unfolding leaves, lime-green summer foliage, and yellow-orange autumn color with some red. The available evidence supports crediting Vertrees as selector and introducer without assigning an undocumented hybridizer or origin year.
