Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Pixie is a charming ultra-dwarf cultivar that forms a dense, tight globe of tiny, deeply lobed green leaves. The spring foliage opens in a fresh, bright green that maintains its compact, miniature scale effortlessly. In autumn, the tiny canopy turns a warm golden-yellow before dropping for the winter. It is an exceptional selection for rock gardens, small containers, and miniature bonsai displays.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Rounded ยท Dwarf

Dwarf with upright branching and a rounded crown, broadly resembling Bloodgood on a smaller scale.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Pixie

Cultivar origin
Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery, Gaston, Oregon, USA
Discovered / selected by
Talon Buchholz (attributed by Gossler Farms)

'Pixie' is associated with Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. Oregon State University explicitly credits that nursery with releasing the cultivar, while Gossler Farms' nursery description attributes its selection to Talon Buchholz. These accounts distinguish selection from commercial introduction, but neither provides a precise year. Its dense branching and dark purple-red foliage have encouraged comparisons with a smaller 'Bloodgood'. Those comparisons alone do not establish parentage. Although one nursery account describes a witches'-broom origin on 'Bloodgood', that claim was not independently confirmed in an original-selector account, so its exact developmental origin remains unresolved here. Oregon State also cautions that 'Pixie', initially released as a dwarf, can develop into a larger semi-dwarf tree.
