Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Fireglow is a stellar upright landscape tree famed for its radiant, glowing red foliage that defies summer heat fade. The deeply lobed leaves emerge in a brilliant crimson shade in spring and maintain their intense color all season long. When autumn arrives, the canopy flares into a spectacular final display of bright scarlet and orange. Its upright, balanced form makes it a standout choice for architectural garden placement.

Growth Habit & Size
Upright
Compact upright tree with a well-branched crown.
What do these growth habit terms mean?
More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
- Upright
- Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
- Spreading
- Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
- Weeping
- Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
- Rounded
- The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
- Dwarf
- A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Fireglow
- Cultivar origin
- Agrate Brianza, near Milan, Italy
- Discovered / selected by
- Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery
Fireglow's story begins in northern Italy, where Fratelli Gilardelli Nursery selected and developed this red-leaved Japanese maple near Milan. Its name captures the luminous effect of sunlight passing through the foliage, making the leaves appear to glow. Nursery and botanical accounts distinguish that Italian selection from its later naming: the Alpine Garden Society reports that it received the name Fireglow in the Netherlands in 1977. That naming date should not be treated as a verified first introduction year. Van den Berk also records Effegi as a synonym. Although frequently compared with Bloodgood for its upright habit and red foliage, that resemblance does not establish its parentage. Fireglow represents an Italian horticultural selection of a Japanese maple species.
