The Bloodgood Japanese Maple is a popular, highly heat-tolerant cultivar well-suited for the coastal climate and humid summers of Virginia Beach. It emerges in spring with a vibrant crimson-red flush, maintains its deep burgundy-red to near-black-red foliage through the heat of mid-summer without fading to green, and transforms into a brilliant crimson-scarlet in the fall. Reaching a mature height and width of 15 to 20 feet with a graceful, upright vase-shaped form, this low-maintenance landscape favorite provides strong structural appeal, smooth bark for winter interest, and reliable resilience against coastal summer sun and heat.

Growth Rate
Slow
Moderate
Fast
Fast
Fast growth reported by Maple Ridge Nursery; growth slows as the tree matures.
Growth Habit & Size
Upright ยท Spreading ยท Rounded
Upright framework with a broad, rounded crown and spreading branches. Upright does not mean narrow.
What do these growth habit terms mean?
More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.
'Bloodgood' takes its name from Bloodgood Nursery on Long Island, New York, where Mississippi State University Extension reports it was sold before World War II. Van den Berk Nurseries likewise credits the American nursery with naming it and places its history before 1940. These accounts document naming and commercial introduction, rather than conclusively identifying the original selector. Van den Berk also records a competing suggestion that Ebbing & Van Groos in Boskoop, the Netherlands, discovered the tree and exported it to America. That attribution remains uncertain. The nursery describes it as a seedling of 'Atropurpureum', but provides no documented controlled cross or hybridizer. Consequently, its original selection location, selector and selection year remain unassigned; the American nursery's role should not automatically be treated as proof of American breeding.
