Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Weeping

Small upright tree with partly pendulous outer branching; not a fully cascading laceleaf form.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Peaches And Cream

Cultivar origin
Yamina Rare Plants, Australia
Discovered / selected by
Arnold Teese

'Peaches And Cream' is an Australian Japanese maple selection credited directly to Arnold Teese by his nursery, Yamina Rare Plants. That original-nursery account establishes the selector but gives no selection or introduction date. Maple Ridge Nursery reports discovery as a seedling at Yamina in 1980, while another nursery account gives 1976; an exact origin year therefore remains unresolved. Parentage accounts also vary, and Yamina's current description does not document a controlled cross, so no hybridizer or definite parental combination is assigned here. Selection should likewise remain distinct from commercial introduction, for which a verified first date was not established. Yamina describes cream-colored new growth with peach-toned tips, the foliage combination reflected in the cultivar's name.
