Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'Grandma Ghost' originated among open-pollinated Japanese maple seedlings at Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. The Dawes Arboretum independently documents this origin and identifies the cultivar as part of the nursery's distinctive Ghost Series. Its original seed parent and pollen parent have not been established, and open pollination should not be confused with controlled hybridization. Although the Ghost Series is associated with Talon Buchholz, available documentation does not conclusively identify the individual who selected 'Grandma Ghost'. A June 2006 horticultural discussion confirms that the cultivar was already being distributed to collectors by that date, but does not establish its first commercial introduction year. The cultivar is distinguished by pale, reticulated foliage with pronounced dark veins and seasonal rose-pink coloration. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was verified; legal protection and royalty obligations remain undetermined.
