Upright ยท Spreading
Upright laceleaf with increasing lateral spread as it matures; staking and training affect its outline.
More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'English Lace' is an unusual upright-growing, red-leaved laceleaf Japanese maple, distinguished by finely dissected foliage and graceful, somewhat pendulous branches. New leaves emerge bright red, deepen to burgundy during summer, and return to brilliant red in autumn. Unlike many cascading dissectum cultivars, 'English Lace' develops a taller, spreading framework. Its historical origin remains uncertain. Buchholz Nursery reports having propagated the cultivar for several years but explicitly questions whether it actually originated in England. The nursery also observes that 'English Lace' was absent from the 2009 fourth edition of Vertrees and Gregory's Japanese Maples. Broken Arrow Nursery confirms that it was not the introducing nursery. No reliable primary documentation establishes the original selector, selection location, parentage, or first commercial introduction year. The cultivar's name alone does not establish an English origin. Patent and registered-trademark status remain unverified.
