Upright ยท Spreading
Upright framework develops a broad, spreading crown that can become much wider than tall.
More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'Burgundy Lace' is a Japanese maple in the Matsumurae Group, distinguished by deeply divided, serrated burgundy-red foliage and a broad, spreading canopy. The Missouri Botanical Garden documents its commercial introduction in 1958 by Vermeulen & Sons of New Jersey. However, the original geographical origin remains disputed. Japanese maple authority J. D. Vertrees believed the cultivar originated in the United States, while horticulturist Freek Vrugtman attributed its origin to the Ebinge and Groos nursery in Boskoop, Netherlands, before its export to America. Neither account conclusively identifies the individual who originally selected the plant. The documented 1958 date therefore represents commercial introduction rather than the original selection year. Its parentage and any controlled hybridization remain undocumented. No United States plant patent or registered trademark specifically covering this maple was verified; similarly named patents concern unrelated plant species.
