Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Ikandi is a dazzling variegated cultivar that commands attention with its striking pink, cream, and green spring foliage. The unique leaf margins create a bright, colorful mosaic effect across the entire compact, shrubby canopy. As summer progresses, the pink tones soften into creamy-white highlights amidst green centers. Autumn concludes the display with glowing golden-yellow and orange tones.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright

Upright medium-sized tree with ascending branches.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Ikandi

Cultivar origin
Buchholz Nursery, Gaston, Oregon, USA
Discovered / selected by
Talon Buchholz
Collection
Buchholz Nursery Flora Wonder Collection

Acer palmatum 'Ikandi', pronounced 'Eye Candy', is a reticulated Japanese maple associated with Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. Plant Lust attributes both its discovery and introduction to Buchholz Nursery's Flora Wonder Collection, while MrMaple and Maplestone Ornamentals independently identify Talon Buchholz as its introducer. These accounts support its nursery origin but do not establish the original selection date, precise first commercial introduction year, or parentage. A horticultural discussion mentioned 'Ikandi' in May 2011, and the JC Raulston Arboretum received accession 150138 on February 23, 2015, confirming its presence in cultivation before that date. The cultivar is distinguished by intensely pink spring foliage with contrasting green veins, developing cream and green variegation during summer. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was verified; propagation rights and royalty obligations remain undetermined.
