Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Geisha Gone Wild is a flamboyant dwarf cultivar celebrated for its intense, multicolored variegation across every leaf. The spring flush bursts forth with vibrant pink, cream, green, and purple speckles that make each leaf a work of art. Throughout summer, the intricate variegation holds strong, providing continuous visual excitement in small spaces. Autumn brings a warm shift into golden-orange tones before the leaves drop.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright

Gracefully branched, vase-shaped upright tree.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Geisha Gone Wild

Cultivar origin
Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery, Gaston, Oregon, United States
Discovered / selected by
Talon Buchholz
Collection
Flora Wonder Collection

Geisha Gone Wild originated as a branch sport of Acer palmatum 'Geisha', rather than a seedling or documented hybrid cross. Buchholz Nursery's own description confirms the sport origin, and specialist nursery accounts credit Talon Buchholz with recognizing, propagating, and naming the distinctive growth. The Dawes Arboretum independently attributes discovery and introduction to Buchholz Nursery's Flora Wonder Collection in Gaston, Oregon. Selection of the original branch and subsequent commercial introduction were separate events, but exact dates for either remain undocumented in the sources reviewed. The resulting cultivar combines pink-edged spring foliage with green and cream summer variegation. Its resemblance to 'Gwen's Rose Delight', marketed as Shirazz, does not establish that they are identical. That cultivar's patent must not automatically be assigned to Geisha Gone Wild.
