Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'Hubbs Red Willow', also written 'Hubb's Red Willow', is a distinctive red-leaved Japanese maple belonging to the linearilobum group. Its foliage consists of exceptionally narrow, elongated lobes that resemble willow leaves, giving the cultivar its descriptive name. New growth emerges bright red before developing deeper burgundy and purple-red tones during summer, followed by brilliant crimson autumn coloration. The tree typically develops an upright, somewhat vase-shaped habit with slender branching. Although the cultivar is established in specialist Japanese maple collections and nursery catalogs, its original selector, selection location, selection date, and first commercial introduction year have not been reliably documented. The name suggests an association with someone named Hubb, but this alone does not establish the identity of its discoverer. Its parentage and any controlled hybridization remain undocumented. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark has been independently verified.
