โ— In Stock
Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Atrolineare is a unique bamboo-like Japanese maple distinguished by its extremely narrow, strap-like linear lobes that create a fine, delicate texture. The foliage emerges with deep reddish-purple tones in spring, maintaining a rich dark burgundy coloration throughout most of the summer months. As autumn arrives, the deeply cut leaves transform into a brilliant, glowing ruby-red. Its upright, slender habit provides a striking vertical element and architectural contrast in landscape designs.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright

Vase-shaped upright tree with narrow strap-like leaves.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Atrolineare

Atrolineare is a longstanding purple-leaved, narrow-lobed Japanese maple whose naming history is better documented than its original selection. Trees and Shrubs Online treats it as synonymous with 'Linearilobum Atropurpureum', describing an erect shrub with dark reddish-purple foliage that later bronzes. Kew records the botanical name Acer palmatum f. atrolineare, published by Schwerin in Gartenflora in 1893, and the earlier name f. linearilobum-atropurpureum, published by Nicholson in 1881. Van den Berk Nurseries attributes its origin to Fritz Graf von Schwerin in Trebbin, Germany, in 1893. However, the botanical record establishes a publication date, not proof that Schwerin selected or commercially introduced the cultivar then. The original selector, parentage, selection location, and commercial introduction date therefore remain unconfirmed. Patent and registered-trademark status also remain undocumented.
