Roots & heritage
Acer oliverianum 'Hot Blonde' is a vigorous, golden-leaved maple discovered and introduced by brothers Matt and Tim Nichols of MrMaple in North Carolina. Talon Buchholz identifies its origin as a chance seedling from Acer oliverianum seed collected at Keith Arboretum in North Carolina. Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' was reportedly the only other Japanese maple in that collection and is therefore considered a possible pollen parent, although this parentage has not been genetically confirmed. The original seedling selection date remains undocumented. A July 2020 horticultural discussion records MrMaple's announcement that the cultivar was being released that year, supporting 2020 as its commercial introduction year. 'Hot Blonde' belongs to the Heatseekers Series and is valued for golden foliage, exceptional heat tolerance, vigorous upright growth, and fiery red autumn color. MrMaple reports considering patent protection but deciding against patenting the selection.
