Growth Habit & Size

Upright

Upright to bushy full-moon maple; give the crown room to broaden.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Jordan

Cultivar origin
Vivai Fratelli Gilardelli, Agrate Brianza, Italy
Discovered / selected by
Giordano Gilardelli

Acer shirasawanum 'Jordan' is a golden full-moon Japanese maple selected by Giordano Gilardelli of Vivai Fratelli Gilardelli in Agrate Brianza, Italy. An Italian nursery account identifies Giordano as its discoverer and breeder, explaining that 'Jordan' is an English rendering of his given name. MrMaple independently attributes the discovery to the Gilardelli nursery. The cultivar was selected for its brilliant yellow foliage, comparatively vigorous growth, and improved sun tolerance. Its leaves emerge golden-yellow, become yellow-green during summer, and develop orange-red autumn coloration. The original selection date and first commercial introduction year remain undocumented, although cultivation was recorded by 2007. Parentage and controlled hybridization have not been established. European plant variety rights records identify an application associated with Vivai Gilardelli, but plant breeders' rights are distinct from patents and trademarks. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was verified.
