Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Spreading

Upright-spreading full-moon maple.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Indian Summer

Cultivar origin
Baumschule Nielsen, Germany
Discovered / selected by
Baumschule Nielsen; individual selector not documented

Acer japonicum 'Indian Summer' is a German nursery selection attributed to Baumschule Nielsen, which explicitly describes the cultivar as its own selection. According to the nursery, it originated as a seedling of Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' and was selected primarily for its exceptionally reliable autumn coloration. Unlike its deeply divided seed parent, 'Indian Summer' develops broader foliage resembling typical Acer japonicum leaves. Its spring growth displays pink-red tones, summer foliage becomes green, and autumn brings brilliant golden-yellow, orange, and red colors. The nursery describes a relatively compact, slower-growing tree. Although the seed parent is documented, the pollen parent and circumstances of pollination are unknown; a controlled hybridization should not be assumed. Neither the original selection date nor the first commercial introduction year could be established. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or applicable registered trademark was verified. This does not establish unrestricted propagation rights.
