Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku', also known as 'Senkaki' or Coral Bark Japanese Maple, is a historic Japanese cultivar valued for its brilliant coral-red young branches during winter. Its original selector, selection date, and parentage are not reliably documented. Historical horticultural accounts suggest the cultivar was known in Japan by the late nineteenth century. References to its subsequent distribution in Europe include introductions associated with English and Irish nurseries during the early twentieth century. These accounts concern commercial introduction rather than the original selection of the cultivar. The tree is distinguished by its bright green spring foliage, yellow to golden autumn color, and exceptionally colorful winter stems. Because historical naming and introduction accounts vary, a precise origin year cannot be established confidently. No specific United States plant patent or registered trademark has been verified for this cultivar.
