Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Peridot Flame is an exciting upright small tree celebrated for its brilliant chartreuse-green spring foliage edged in bright red. The contrasting border creates a fiery outline around each leaf during the fresh spring flush. As summer advances, the leaves mature into a clean solid green before turning warm gold in autumn. It adds a vibrant, energetic splash of color to garden borders.

Growth Rate

Fast

MrMaple describes vigorous growth, estimating 10-12 feet at ten years.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright

Upright tree with large leaves.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

Roots & heritage

The story behind Peridot Flame

'Peridot Flame' is an upright Japanese maple whose original selection history remains undocumented in the reviewed nursery sources. Maillot-Γ‰rable explicitly credits Guy Maillot with its introduction into Europe, but this regional introduction does not identify the original selector, country of origin, or first worldwide commercial release. MrMaple credits Talon Buchholz for photographs, which is insufficient evidence to attribute the cultivar's discovery or breeding to him. No verified selection date, named parents, controlled cross, or original collection accession was located. Its documented horticultural identity is clearer: nursery descriptions report peach-toned spring growth that matures to olive or bronze-green, followed by yellow through orange-red autumn foliage. These characteristics support describing the plant without attaching an unsupported origin narrative.
