Ki Hachijo is a distinctive upright Japanese maple prized for its unusual, bright yellowish-green foliage and delicate structure. The spring leaves emerge with a crisp, luminous chartreuse color that remains fresh and vibrant through summer. In autumn, the canopy transforms into a warm, glowing display of clear yellow and soft orange. It offers a refreshing alternative to traditional green and red maples in the landscape.

Growth Rate

Moderate
Fast
Slow
Maple Ridge describes slow juvenile growth; older plants can become substantial trees.
Growth Habit & Size
Upright Β· Spreading Β· Rounded
Upright young tree develops a rounded, spreading mature crown, often wider than tall.
What do these growth habit terms mean?
More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.
'Ki Hachijo' is an established Japanese maple cultivar also encountered as 'Kihachijo' and 'Ki-hachijΕ'. Junker's Nursery interprets its name as referring to a tree from Hachijo Island, but that interpretation alone does not verify where the original plant was selected. The reviewed nursery and botanical sources do not establish an original selector, hybridizer, parentage, or first introducing nursery. Selection and introduction dates therefore remain undocumented. Trees and Shrubs Online records its deeply toothed foliage and autumn progression through rose-flushed yellow to orange and red. Junker's additionally describes conspicuous bark striping. Public-garden holdings document cultivated specimens and their suppliers, but those accession records should not be mistaken for the cultivar's original collection or evidence of its first introduction.
