Cultivar Description & Characteristics
Jubilee is a rare and refined upright cultivar noted for its exceptionally delicate, narrow-lobed green foliage and graceful branching. The spring leaves emerge in a light, cheerful green that dances effortlessly in summer breezes. As autumn cools the air, the canopy transforms into a brilliant display of glowing gold and orange hues. Its slender, upright silhouette fits wonderfully into narrow garden borders and architectural entryways.

Growth Habit & Size

Upright ยท Spreading

Upright tree with a broad, spreading canopy.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Jubilee

Cultivar origin
Buchholz Nursery, Gaston, Oregon, USA
Discovered / selected by
Talon Buchholz

Acer palmatum 'Jubilee' is a reticulated Japanese maple selected and cultivated by Talon Buchholz of Buchholz Nursery in Gaston, Oregon. The originating nursery confirms his association with the cultivar, while specialist retailer MrMaple independently identifies Buchholz as its introducer. Its foliage emerges in spring with pink reticulation, then develops cream coloring, soft pink blushes, contrasting green veins, and chartreuse highlights. Autumn foliage turns brilliant crimson to scarlet red. The tree develops a relatively compact, upright habit with a broad canopy. Although both selection and introduction are attributed to Buchholz, neither the original selection date nor the first commercial introduction year is documented in the sources reviewed. Its seed parent, pollen parent, and any controlled hybridization remain unconfirmed. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was established from the available evidence; this does not determine propagation rights or royalty obligations.
