More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.
For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

Roots & heritage
Acer palmatum 'Jerry Schwartz', more commonly documented under the original spelling 'Jerre Schwartz', is a dwarf Japanese maple associated with Billy Schwartz of Green Mansions Nursery in Pennsylvania. Schwartz named the selection in honor of his mother, Jerre. A 2008 account from a grower who obtained scion wood directly from Schwartz corroborates this naming history and the cultivar's origin. Specialist nursery sources describe it as a selection originating from a witch's broom, although the original parent tree and exact discovery date remain undocumented. Havlis Nursery identifies 2005 as its commercial introduction year, not its selection year. The cultivar produces finely divided, sharply toothed leaves that emerge pink-red, gradually mature to bronze-green, and develop brilliant autumn colors. Its compact, upright growth makes it suitable for smaller gardens. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was independently verified; this does not establish unrestricted propagation rights.
