Growth Habit & Size

Spreading ยท Weeping

Low, outward-spreading branches form a weeping umbrella; graft height and training affect overall height. Dwarf was not newly assigned from small size alone.

What do these growth habit terms mean?

More than one term can apply. Branch direction, crown shape and size describe different characteristics, and the outline can change as a tree matures.

Upright
Main stems and branches emphasize upward growth. An upright tree can still develop a broad canopy.
Spreading
Branches extend outward to form a broad canopy. The tree does not have to be wider than it is tall.
Weeping
Branches or branchlets arch or hang downward. The tree can still have an upright trunk.
Rounded
The crown has a rounded outline. This describes the overall shape rather than the direction of each branch.
Dwarf
A cultivar with a smaller natural stature than typical forms of its species. Dwarf describes size, not branch direction or a fixed height limit; it does not automatically mean slow growth.

For example: Bloodgood can grow upright while developing a broad, rounded canopy with spreading branches.

The story behind Jeddeloh Orange

Cultivar origin
Jeddeloh Nursery, Germany

Acer palmatum 'Jeddeloh Orange' is a cascading laceleaf Japanese maple introduced by Jeddeloh Nursery in Germany. Specialist nurseries, including Vineland Nurseries and Maplestone Ornamentals, independently attribute its introduction to this German nursery. However, the individual who originally selected the plant, its selection date, and its first commercial introduction year remain undocumented. Its parentage is also unknown, and there is no reliable evidence establishing a controlled cross. The cultivar belongs to the Dissectum Group and produces finely divided foliage with soft green centers and orange-red margins during spring. Older leaves become greener in summer, while fresh growth retains colorful highlights. Autumn foliage turns vivid yellow-orange to pumpkin orange. The Royal Horticultural Society recognizes 'Jeddeloh Orange' as an accepted cultivar name. No cultivar-specific United States plant patent or registered trademark was independently established; this does not determine propagation rights or royalty obligations.
